Game Preview
Despite losing their top hitter Christian Yelich to season-ending back surgery, the Milwaukee Brewers are riding high and will aim to complete a series sweep of the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday afternoon.
Leading the National League Central, the Brewers have won their last four games, all against division leaders. They secured back-to-back victories against the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier in the week and have continued their strong performance with wins in the first two games of the series against the Guardians.
The Brewers have managed to stay positive despite a slew of injuries, thanks to players stepping up. Recently, catcher William Contreras has been a key contributor, hitting his fourth home run in the last six games on Saturday. His home run proved to be the game-winner in a 2-1 pitchers’ duel.
"I’m feeling really good at the plate and really comfortable," Contreras said. "I’m just doing what I can to help the team. We’re playing solid baseball on both sides, and even though some might not have expected us to win as much recently, we show up ready to play every game."
For the Guardians, leading the American League Central, timely hitting has been elusive in this series. They entered the matchup with a five-game winning streak but have only managed four runs in the first two games. Will Brennan’s seven-game hitting streak ended with Saturday’s loss, while Josh Naylor’s home run was the Guardians’ sole run in the series.
"It’s a long season, and I’m learning that more every day, but these guys give their best every game," said Guardians manager Stephen Vogt.
The Guardians will turn to right-hander Ben Lively (10-7, 3.71 ERA) for the series finale. Lively has struggled against the Brewers in his career, with a 0-3 record and a 3.47 ERA over four appearances. His latest start against the Chicago Cubs saw him allowing three earned runs and two home runs before being pulled early.
The Brewers will counter with right-hander Colin Rea (10-4, 3.72 ERA), who is looking to rebound from one of his toughest outings of the season. Rea gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits, including four home runs, in a loss to the Dodgers. He has only faced the Guardians once in his career, delivering two shutout innings in relief in August 2020.
