Game Preview
The New York Yankees kicked off the American League Championship Series with a solid performance from Carlos Rodon and home runs from two of their big hitters. Now, they aim to build on that momentum and secure a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday, with Gerrit Cole taking the mound.
The Yankees are seeking their first 2-0 lead in an ALCS since 2009, the year they defeated the Los Angeles Angels on their way to their most recent World Series title. However, they’ve dropped the second game in their last five ALCS appearances, including losses to the Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, and Texas Rangers.
In Game 1 on Monday, New York claimed a 5-2 win, fueled by Rodon’s six strong innings with nine strikeouts and no walks. Juan Soto belted his first postseason homer as a Yankee, while Giancarlo Stanton added another, bringing his postseason batting average to .368. The Yankees capitalized on Cleveland’s mistakes, scoring twice on wild pitches.
"We had a lot of good at-bats," said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. First baseman Anthony Rizzo highlighted the team’s collective effort, saying, "No one needs to be the hero. We just keep passing it on to the next guy."
Cleveland, playing in its first ALCS since 2016, couldn’t get much going offensively, striking out 14 times. However, Steven Kwan continued his hot postseason streak, hitting .480 across 11 games. The Guardians rallied in the eighth inning but only managed to score one run.
"We never quit," said Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt. "We’ll be ready to fight tomorrow."
Cole (1-0, 3.00 ERA) is making his third start of the playoffs after two outings in the ALDS against the Royals. After a shaky Game 1, he rebounded in Game 4, allowing just one run over seven innings. Cole has been dominant against Cleveland in the postseason, boasting a 4-0 record with a 1.98 ERA in four starts.
Cleveland’s Tanner Bibee (0-0, 2.08 ERA) will make his third postseason start after two no-decisions in the ALDS. He’s had limited experience against the Yankees, last facing them in May when he allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings.
