Game Preview

The Philadelphia Phillies, despite holding the best record in baseball, have not been performing up to their potential recently.

After dropping two out of three games in their last three series, the Phillies aim to get back on track starting Friday in the first game of their three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians.

Reflecting on the team’s recent struggles, Philadelphia’s Bryce Harper highlighted a particularly rough game just before the All-Star break. "The A’s kicked the stuffing out of us the last game," Harper said about the 18-3 loss to Oakland on July 14. He emphasized the necessity of closing out games, especially referencing the recent 8-7 and 5-4 losses to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Minnesota Twins, where the Phillies squandered three-run leads.

"We’re just going through a rough patch with our offense and our bullpen’s ability to throw strikes," Phillies manager Rob Thomson remarked. "However, I’m confident in the talent we have and believe we’ll bounce back."

Phillies shortstop Trea Turner has been a bright spot, hitting ten home runs in July alone and batting .356 with 22 RBIs and 18 runs in the month.

Philadelphia will look to left-hander Cristopher Sanchez (7-5, 2.97 ERA) to start on Friday. Sanchez made a brief appearance in the All-Star Game, retiring both batters he faced, but then took a tough loss against the Pirates on Saturday, giving up two runs over 5 2/3 innings in a 4-1 defeat.
