After a disappointing 2021 season when they finished with an 8-9 record, the Cleveland Browns needed to make a splash in the offseason to bolster their roster. At the time, they seemed to have just done that with the acquisition of quarterback Deshaun Watson for a haul of draft picks, including three first-rounders in 2022, 2023 and 2024. With Watson’s well-documented transgressions and looming suspension, the Browns gambled on the Clemson product and will be without their signal-caller for the first eleven-game of the season.
With Watson in limbo, the Browns added some insurance when they signed journeyman and former Dolphin Jacoby Brissett to a one-year deal. The 91st overall pick in 2016 is used to fill in as a starter under unusual circumstances. He stepped in for Tom Brady (deflatagate), Jimmy Garoppolo (injury), Andrew Luck (retirement) and last season with Tua Tagovailoa (injury). Despite being a backup for much of his career, Brissett did manage to start in 37 games compiling an uninspiring 14-23 record.
The Browns also signed WR Amari Cooper to replace Jarvis Landry at the position but Brissett will certainly be tasked to feed the ball to his two workhorses in the backfield. Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt will fill that duty but Hunt may start the season as an unhappy camper as he demanded a trade due to the adjournment in his extension contract. Both backs were ranked best backfield duo in the NFL. DE Myles Garrett leads the defense with double-digit sacks in his last 4 seasons. The unit has improved in the offseason and most have returned in almost every spot.
The Browns caught a break with their schedule starting the season against the Panthers, Jets, Steelers and Falcons; all winnable games even with Brissett at the helm.

The Bottom Line:
The uncertainty of Deshaun Watson’s status this season is awkward and unsettling but you have to like his chances to suit up and start in Week 13 against his former team, the Texans. If Brissett can keep a winning record in the first eleven games of the season, the Browns may have a chance to keep rolling with Watson under center. This will be a strange campaign for Cleveland regardless with Watson’s aura around the team. This sentiment could very well doom the team’s chances to make the postseason.
