Game Preview

The Atlanta Braves are set to conclude their three-game series against the Colorado Rockies with right-hander Reynaldo Lopez on the mound, eyeing a series sweep on Thursday.

Atlanta (76-63) has taken the first two games, winning 3-0 and 5-2, and holds a series lead of 3-2 over the Rockies (51-89) this season.

Trailing the Philadelphia Phillies by seven games in the National League East, Atlanta also maintains a slight edge over the New York Mets for the last NL wild-card spot by half a game.

Lopez (8-4, 2.00 ERA) will match up against Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber (4-10, 4.69) in their final seasonal encounter.

Recently named an All-Star, Lopez has been formidable since returning from the IL due to right forearm soreness. Over three August starts, he surrendered just one run per game, boasting a 1.59 ERA with 23 strikeouts across 17 innings.

In his most recent outing against the Phillies, Lopez pitched six innings, allowing one run, and secured a win for Atlanta in the series.

"Maintaining confidence is key," Lopez remarked. "I focus on staying composed, even if a pitch goes awry, and continuously challenge the hitters."

Lopez has only faced Colorado once before in a relief appearance last year, pitching a scoreless inning.

Gomber is set for his 27th start of the season, matching his career-high from the previous year. He’s managed to last at least six innings in five of his last six starts, recording a 4.37 ERA during this stretch. His last outing resulted in a loss to Baltimore, where he gave up three runs over six innings.

"The start of the game felt off, my arm wasn’t as responsive," Gomber explained. "It’s late in the season, and fatigue sets in, but I found my rhythm towards the end."

Despite decent performances, Gomber has struggled on the road with a 4.89 ERA in 15 starts.

He has a challenging track record against Atlanta, with a 7.71 ERA in six previous outings.

The Rockies’ outfielder Sam Hilliard, once with the Braves, added some momentum on Wednesday, contributing an RBI triple and drawing two walks.

Atlanta remains optimistic about the return of second baseman Whit Merrifield, who was recently sidelined after being struck in the back of the head by a pitch. Though he passed his initial concussion assessments, he missed Wednesday’s game due to lingering grogginess.

"I was fortunate it wasn’t worse," Merrifield said, reflecting on the incident. "It’s frustrating that there are no immediate consequences for the pitcher, while I’m sidelined, especially when such incidents can be life-threatening."
