Game Preview

The New York Liberty have secured the first playoff spot in the WNBA this season after their victory over the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday. With a significant portion of the regular season still to play, New York will aim to extend its winning streak on Tuesday when they host the struggling Dallas Wings.

The Liberty’s 79-67 win against Las Vegas marked their sixth consecutive victory, with the last two coming after the Olympic break. New York (23-4) relied on their trademark solid defense and rebounding prowess, limiting the Aces to 36.9 percent shooting and dominating the boards 46-30.

"We’re thrilled to have clinched a playoff spot," said guard Sabrina Ionescu, who scored 23 points in the win. "Our goal goes beyond just making the playoffs; we want to keep winning and improving as a team."

Head coach Sandy Brondello, the only coach in WNBA history to reach the playoffs in each of her first 12 seasons, is not worried about her team losing focus now that they’ve clinched. "I’ve been in this situation before and always trust my players," she said. "While we’re happy, there are still areas we can improve."

In contrast to New York’s strong defense, which allows just 76.1 points per game and holds opponents to 41.1 percent shooting, the Wings (6-20) have struggled defensively. They rank last in both points allowed (90.5 per game) and opponent shooting percentage (47.1 percent). Dallas recently suffered a 109-91 loss to the Connecticut Sun, allowing them to shoot 57.6 percent from the field.

On a positive note, the Wings welcomed back forward Satou Sabally, who scored 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and provided seven assists in her season debut after a shoulder injury. "We need to rediscover our foundation and set high standards for ourselves," Sabally said following the loss. "Finding our identity and playing to it is crucial."

Tuesday’s matchup is the first of four encounters between the two teams as the regular season approaches its conclusion on September 19.
