Game Preview
Astros manager Joe Espada expressed satisfaction with Yordan Alvarez’s performance despite Houston’s 3-1 loss in Game 1 of the American League wild-card series against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.
As they prepare to even the best-of-three series on Wednesday afternoon, the Astros are eager for contributions. Alvarez, who returned from a right knee sprain sustained on September 22, went 2-for-4, including a double and a single. He was replaced by pinch runner Zach Dezenzo, who scored the team’s only run in the ninth inning.
"Alvarez had two hits and looked good," Espada noted. "He moved well and showed good power in his swings. It was encouraging to see him perform like that."
With Alvarez healthy, the Astros will rely on right-hander Hunter Brown (11-9, 3.49 ERA) for the crucial Game 2. Espada described Brown as a "no-brainer" choice for the start, highlighting his impressive turnaround after a rocky relief appearance earlier this season against Detroit. Brown has since gone 6-1 with a 1.83 ERA over nine starts and has excelled in his last 13 outings.
"That relief appearance was a turning point for me," Brown said, recalling how the experience helped him regain his form.
Brown is undefeated against the Tigers, holding a 2.93 ERA in five career matchups, but this will mark his first postseason start.
Meanwhile, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch plans to employ an opener strategy for Game 2, with left-hander Tyler Holton (7-2, 2.19 ERA) taking the mound. Holton had a strong September, going 2-1 with a 1.06 ERA, though he has faced the Astros only in relief.
Hinch aims to keep things unpredictable following ace Tarik Skubal’s stellar six-inning performance in Game 1. The Tigers are well-prepared to leverage their pitching depth in this matchup.
"I love the chaos of our approach," Skubal said. "Our bullpen has been mixing and matching effectively, and it’s challenging for the opposing team to find their rhythm against us."
