Game Preview

Tarik Skubal is having a standout season for the Detroit Tigers, having earned his first All-Star nod and a place in Seattle University’s Hall of Fame. As he faces the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night at T-Mobile Park, Skubal (12-4, 2.57 ERA) will be supported by a likely strong presence of Redhawks fans.

Skubal, a leading contender for the American League Cy Young Award and pitching Triple Crown, leads the AL in ERA, is tied for first in strikeouts with 162, and trails slightly in wins. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch has praised Skubal’s ability to handle expectations and pressure, noting that consistent strong performances will ensure success.

Skubal recently experienced a rare loss, giving up five runs in a 9-2 defeat against Kansas City, breaking his four-game winning streak. He previously had a 3.60 ERA in one start at Seattle.

In contrast, Mariners right-hander George Kirby (8-7, 3.04) did not factor into the decision in his last outing, allowing two runs over 5 1/3 innings against Boston. Kirby has struggled in previous starts against Detroit, holding a 6.43 ERA in three appearances.

The Tigers won the series opener 4-2, with rookie Keider Montero pitching six innings of one-run ball and Parker Meadows contributing a single and a 415-foot homer. Meadows, recently returned from a hamstring injury, has been productive in his comeback.

For the Mariners, Luke Raley homered in the loss, and the team’s lead in the AL West was reduced to a half-game over Houston. They faced a scare when Justin Turner was hit by a fastball, but X-rays on his hand were negative. Manager Scott Servais is hopeful Turner will be available for the next game.
