Game Preview

Duke and Northwestern, both victorious yet tentative in their season openers, will face off in a non-conference clash on Friday night in Evanston, Illinois.

"This game will be won in the trenches," said Manny Diaz, Duke’s new head coach.

Each squad is looking to enhance their offensive play. Duke (1-0) gradually distanced itself from Elon in a 26-3 victory last Friday, while Northwestern (1-0) narrowly defeated Miami (Ohio) 13-6 on Saturday.

"We’re pleased with last Saturday’s win, but we’re aware much improvement is needed," Northwestern coach David Braun stated. "We’re looking forward to hosting Duke."

Northwestern produced 328 total yards in their first game. A bright spot was quarterback Mike Wright, who released his passes quickly, an important factor facing a Duke defense that notched eight sacks against Elon.

"That unit understands they need to continue to develop," Braun remarked about his offense.

Duke may find itself engaged in a low-scoring battle once more.

"Their defense is designed to limit big plays," Diaz noted. "They aim to keep scores low."

Nonetheless, Duke intends to challenge Northwestern’s defensive schemes.

"We aim to take and make those deep passes," Diaz said.

Last year, Duke defeated Northwestern 38-14 in what was Northwestern’s first road game under Braun as interim coach. Now, Duke visits with a new coach at the helm.

In the 2022 matchup, Duke’s offense was powered by then-stars running back Jordan Waters and quarterback Riley Leonard, who have since transferred to North Carolina State and Notre Dame, respectively.

This year, quarterback Maalik Murphy, a Texas transfer, impressed in his Duke debut, something that Northwestern must prepare for.

"They have a quarterback with one of the most powerful arms we’ve seen in a while," Braun said. "It’s going to put unique pressure on our defense."

Diaz, with past experience in the Big Ten as Penn State’s defensive coordinator, is familiar with Northwestern’s style.

Duke leads the series 13-10, having won the last five encounters.
