NFL Matchup: New York Giants @ Green Bay Packers
When: 9:30 AM ET, Sunday, October 9, 2022
Where: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Tottenham
Where to watch: NFLN
The New York Giants like to think they are turning the corner and are going to start looking like an NFL team again. And they have gotten off to a great start for first-year coach Brian Daboll.
BetAnySports patrons may have heard all the rave reviews for the team’s decision to hire him. And many of those came from former Buffalo players who played under him when he was the offensive coordinator there.
There are some who question the quality of the Giants’ wins, but in the NFL, a win is a win, and that’s hard enough. Things get more difficult on Sunday morning (9:30 AM ET). That’s when they take on the Green Bay Packers in a game that is being played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
Mac Jones was ruled out at quarterback for the New England Patriots last weekend. And the Packers were laying close to double digits. And then, with Brian Hoyer, the flat veteran backup, got knocked out of action. That left them dealing with rookie Bailey Zappe, who had never taken a snap in the NFL before. But the Pats took them right down to the wire and into overtime before Green Bay registered the 27-24 win. That’s their third straight, as they’ve gotten on the right track after a tough loss to Minnesota.
The Giants have a 3-1 mark right now, and a lot of people are pinching themselves. That’s because even with bad teams in front of them, they haven’t been able to get the job done in recent years.
But there is potential trouble on the horizon. The Giants came out of Sunday’s 20-12 win over Chicago with serious issues at quarterback. Daniel Jones has a sprained ankle, and backup Tyrod Taylor is in the concussion protocol. So there is a decent chance neither of them is going to be available for the London trip.
So the Packers could be facing a third-string quarterback once again.

NFL Betting Preview — About the Green Bay Packers
In the process of engineering these last three wins, Aaron Rodgers has been careful in turning to his veteran receivers. Allan Lazard had 116 yards for him last week. Randall Cobb had 42 more. Robert Tonyan had a TD catch. But rookies also played a role. Christian Watson had a reverse for a touchdown, and even though Romeo Doubs fumbled, he also scored a TD.
What’s glaring about this Green Bay team, however, is that they are ready, willing, and able to pound the ball. They had 199 yards on the ground against the Patriots and rankl seventh overall in rushing yards. They have effective putting Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon in the backfield together. Jones is second in the NFL in yards per carry after contact (3.4).
Defensively, the Packers are allowing 71% completions but have held the opposition to less than 24% success on third down.
NFL Betting Preview — About the New York Giants
As this is being written, most observers think there is little chance that Jones or Taylor will be available.
That would leave them with Davis Webb, who had originally come to them in the 2017 draft. He’s spent time as a third stringer and on practice squads. But he has never thrown a pass in an NFL game.
There is some question as to whether Daboll feels Webb is ready to start a game. So, expect that the Giants will be combing the practice squads around the NFL. But here’s what’s kind of interesting. When the Giants sat down Eli Manning for a couple of games in that year, Geno Smith got the starts. But some players were insisting that Webb was sharp enough to deserve get a look. We’ll see if he gets that now.
The good news is that New York may have the most spectacular weapon on the field. Saquon Barkley is finally fulfilling his promise. And it’s because he’s been healthy for a change. Daboll’s offensive scheme may have something to do with it too. After he had 146 yards against the Bears last Sunday, he now leads the league with 483. And as a team, the Giants lead the league in rushing. They are running the ball 52.3% of the time.
New defensive coordinator Wink Martindale has added his complex schemes, and the Giants have yielded just over 57% completions. That’s fourth best in the NFL.
NFL Betting Preview — So what’s the verdict?
We’re not sure we have a clear verdict. But if it must be Webb at quarterback, the Giants will have to go run-heavy. The Packers have allowed five yards a carry. So Big Blue may just have a chance to keep this close. Remember, this isn’t Lambeau.
