Daniel Jones has been playing spectacularly since Week 13, becoming the second highest rated quarterback in the NFL and the top rushing quarterback. His performance over the past month has been near perfect with no turnovers when compared to Josh Allen’s eight, higher completion percentage and passer rating, more yards per carry and better numbers in almost every statistical category for the last seven games. The Giants offense is now much more formidable with him at the helm as they have scored 38 and 31 points respectively in their last two weeks compared to 19 to 16 or 21 to 20 scores before Week 7 and 8 when they were 6-1 overall. Their offensive DVOA has skyrocketed to fifth place in passing, first place in rushing (highest DVOA wise) since Week 13.
The Eagles’ defense, while ranked 29th in rushing yards allowed to opposing quarterbacks, has faced some mobile quarterbacks this season. While Philadelphia’s defense is still a talented and well-coached unit, they may have difficulty containing Jones when he extends plays outside of the pocket. On the other side, the Giants defense appears to be flying under the radar. Led by Dexter Lawrence – who took two years to find his home in the NFL – Leonard Williams and Tarell Basham on the edge, New York’s defensive front could prove to be formidable for Philly’s dangerous array of weapons at offense like Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, DeVontae Smith and Dallas Goedert.
With a hot defensive line facing an MVP candidate at the helm, the Giants are an intriguing underdog entering Saturday night’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles recent lackluster performances over their last four games has me wondering as they have gone 0- 4 against the spread. Bottom line, do I think the Eagles are going to win? Probably. However, do I think they can cover the spread? I don’t think so.
That said, I’m taking the New York Giants to cover the spread at +7.5 for this divisional round matchup. Daniel Jones and that Giants defensive line have just been red hot in the past couple of weeks, whereas Jalen Hurts has been looking a little rusty.
