Game Preview
The Baltimore Orioles and starting pitcher Corbin Burnes are both looking for redemption as they kick off a four-game series against the visiting Houston Astros on Thursday.
The Orioles have struggled recently, managing only three hits in a 4-3 loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday. This defeat marks their fourth loss in six games, leaving manager Brandon Hyde frustrated. "It’s tough to win a Major League Baseball game getting three hits. With our pitching struggling, we need to find a way to score more runs," Hyde said.
Meanwhile, the Astros are also eager to bounce back after losing two of their last three games, including a 4-1 defeat to the Boston Red Sox. Despite this setback, they have won 11 of their last 14 games overall.
Burnes (12-5, 3.10 ERA) is coming off a tough outing where he allowed eight runs on ten hits in just four innings against Boston, marking the shortest outing of his season. "We fell behind and had to come over the plate more than we wanted," Burnes admitted. Before this loss, the Orioles had won five straight games with him on the mound. The team has adjusted its rotation to give pitchers extra rest, which Burnes believes will help.
In their previous meeting in June, the Astros swept the Orioles with a combined score of 27-13. Burnes took the loss in the second game, allowing four runs in seven innings, including home runs to Yordan Alvarez and Chas McCormick. He has struggled historically against the Astros, holding an 0-2 record with a 6.23 ERA in three appearances.
The Astros will counter with right-hander Spencer Arrighetti (5-11, 5.20 ERA), who has a 4.11 ERA over his last five starts. Despite his struggles, Houston has only scored 11 runs across those games. The Astros left their recent homestand encouraged by Justin Verlander’s return, where he allowed two runs over five innings in his first start in over two months.
Houston’s Alex Bregman is dealing with minor elbow swelling but remains productive, having hit a home run in their last game. The Astros have also enjoyed success on the road, winning their last eight games in away venues, including stops in Texas, Boston, and Tampa Bay.
