Game Preview
The Baltimore Orioles are looking for a turnaround as they complete a series against the Houston Astros, having tied the four-game matchup with a win on Friday.
The Orioles secured a 7-5 comeback victory, powered by Anthony Santander’s grand slam in the eighth inning.
"It was like a big exhale in our dugout," said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde.
Santander’s 38th homer this season felt significant beyond the four runs it brought in.
"It was a great atmosphere, and Santander delivered when we really needed it," Hyde noted. "We caught a couple of breaks tonight, which we haven’t been getting. It was a massive hit for us."
This win was crucial for the Orioles, who have struggled lately, managing just three victories in their last eight games. The team expressed a sense of renewed energy after the victory.
"That reminds us of who we are," said Santander. "We focus for the whole game and compete for all 27 outs."
Meanwhile, the Astros have only lost four times in their last 16 games.
"We need to turn the page, flush that one, and get ready for Saturday," said Astros manager Joe Espada.
Houston will start Framber Valdez (13-5, 3.20 ERA), who is on a five-game winning streak and has an impressive 2.39 ERA over his last ten outings. Valdez faced the Orioles on June 23, allowing just one run over seven innings.
Albert Suarez (6-4, 3.18 ERA) will take the mound for Baltimore. He has not allowed a run in his last three outings, covering 17 2/3 innings, but has only one win during this stretch.
Suarez previously struggled against the Astros, allowing five runs in five innings during his only career start against them on June 23.
Baltimore may face a roster decision on Saturday, as center fielder Cedric Mullins exited Friday’s game with quad tightness after making a key catch in the second inning.
"I’m hopeful it’s just day-to-day," Hyde said of Mullins. "That catch saved a run."
On Friday, the Orioles reinstated Keegan Akin from paternity leave, sending fellow left-handed reliever Nick Vespi back to Triple-A Norfolk.
