Game Preview

The Texas Rangers face a critical moment in their bid to defend their World Series title as they conclude a three-game series against the Houston Astros on Wednesday in Arlington, Texas. Currently, the Rangers are positioned third in the American League West, trailing by five games, and 8 1/2 games out of the final wild-card spot.

Texas has struggled recently, losing eight of their last 11 games. The season series against the Astros is tied 6-6, and the Rangers managed just one hit in a 4-2 loss on Tuesday, although it was a significant one. Corey Seager’s two-run homer in the ninth inning ended Framber Valdez’s no-hit bid with two outs.

Seager’s homer was his fifth in the last five games, bringing his season total to 24. Despite Seager’s strong performance, the rest of the team has struggled, especially against Valdez.

Valdez, who was close to his second career no-hitter, saw his bid broken up by Seager’s late blast. He walked Josh Smith before Seager’s homer. Yordan Alvarez added a two-run homer for Houston, and Jake Meyers had two run-scoring singles. The Astros, who snapped a three-game losing streak, are now a half-game behind the Seattle Mariners in the AL West.

For the series finale, Houston will start left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (4-9, 4.67 ERA), making his second start since being acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays. Kikuchi, who struck out 11 in his debut against the Tampa Bay Rays, is winless since June 11, going 0-4 with a 7.75 ERA in his final eight starts with Toronto. His last outing against the Rangers was on July 26, where he allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings.

The Rangers will counter with right-hander Jose Urena (3-6, 3.70 ERA) in what is his eighth start of the season.
