All they needed was only a victory in their last regular season game against the worst team in the league, in the Jacksonville Jaguars, in order to secure a spot in the playoffs. That was what the 14-point favorite Indianapolis Colts faced but got manhandled by the Jaguars in an embarrassing 26-11 loss to end their hopes. That debacle rested on quarterback Carson Wentz’s shoulders who was promptly shipped out of town. Enter former league MVP Matt Ryan who was acquired from Atlanta for a third-round selection.
The 37-year-old Boston College product joins an offense led by running back rushing leader Jonathan Taylor who set a franchise record with 1,811 yards and 18 touchdowns. Ryan is coming off a gruesome season in Atlanta but to his defense, he had a terrible offensive line and no running game to speak of, so it is fair to give him the benefit of the doubt for last season. Ryan will also have better wide receiver talent at his disposal with Michael Pittman Jr., who caught 88 balls for 1,082 yards in his sophomore season.
The Colts possess three stellar blockers to protect Ryan in Quenton Nelson, Ryan Kelly and Braden Smith. Nelson and Kelly were dealt with nagging injuries last season but should rebound in 2022. The Colts used their first draft pick on WR Alec Pierce out of Cincinnati and he should have an immediate impact as a rookie. Defensively, this unit should be improved. Former NFL defensive player of the year Stephon Gilmore joins the secondary and DE Yannick Ngakoue pads a pass rush that needed help. LB Darius Leonard and pro-bowler DT DeForest Buckner should maintain their impact plays.
The Colts do play the Texans and Jaguars twice this season so these four games should be easy-pickings. They get to steer through the NFC East and will have tough games against the Chiefs, the Raiders and the Titans on two occasions.

If Ryan can stay in harm’s way, avoid turnovers and proficiently hand the ball to Taylor, the Colts should take the AFC South title. While the defending champ Titans endured a terrible offseason, the Colts have rectified their quarterback situation and pass-rushing issues. The two games versus Tennessee will be defining as to whom gets the honor of representing the AFC South but the Colts should come out on top in their division.
