Game Preview

UCLA returns to the Rose Bowl on Friday night, energized by its first winning streak of 2024, as they welcome Iowa for a Big Ten showdown.

The Bruins (3-5, 2-4 Big Ten) posted back-to-back road wins over Rutgers (35-32) and Nebraska (27-20) surrounding their bye week, fueled by improved play from quarterback Ethan Garbers. Garbers threw six touchdowns without an interception in these games, a sharp turnaround after throwing picks in each of his first five starts.

"He’s been efficient and spreading the ball well, including to the running backs," said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz.

The Bruins have five players with at least 15 receptions this season, led by running back T.J. Harden’s 27 catches. Eight different Bruins have scored through the air, with Logan Loya recording three touchdown catches among his 20 receptions.

Though UCLA’s run game has struggled—last in the nation at 73.9 yards per game—they’ll face Iowa’s sturdy defense, which ranks 18th nationally in rush defense, allowing 106.3 yards per game. Linebacker Jay Higgins, who ranks fourth in the FBS with 94 tackles, anchors the Hawkeye defense.

Iowa (6-3, 4-2) makes its first Rose Bowl visit since the 2016 game against Stanford, coming off its own two-game winning streak with decisive wins over Northwestern and Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes, however, have been less dominant on the road, with two double-digit losses since September.

This week marks a unique trip for Iowa, as they head west on a quick turnaround. Reflecting on a past 10-hour bus trip to Rutgers during his time at Maine, Ferentz noted, “This flight to L.A. feels like a breeze—and the weather will likely be better, too.”
