The Urban Meyer era mercifully ended after just 13 games and a disastrous 2-11 record which amounts to probably the worst head-coaching hire in NFL lore. Meyer started making horrible decisions days after he was tabbed as head coach and it never stopped. Hopefully, the Jaguars have cleaned up the mess from another disastrous season. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence now has a competent coaching staff led by Super Bowl winner Doug Pederson to help him reach the stars. Pederson is a perfect contrast to Meyer and a great fit for Lawrence to blossom.
The Clemson product has to sense that this is his rookie season and must put last season to rest and start anew. The Jaguars finished last season in style by upsetting the Colts 26-11 as a 14-point underdog and Lawrence arguably had his best start of his young career. He will have a more complete cast of receivers and getting to see his teammate at Clemson for the first time in RB Travis Etienne, who could provide a spark for what was an anemic offense. Etienne was drafted 25th in last year’s draft but missed the entire season with a foot injury.
After compiling a mere 32 sacks last season, the Jaguars set their priorities on defense this offseason. Five of their seven draft selections were defensive players, including DE Travon Walker whom they selected first overall. They upgraded their front seven with the additions of Walker, 20th overall pick LB Devin Lloyd, LB Josh Allen, DE Roy Robertson-Harris and newly signed DT Folorunso Fatukasi. The entire unit should take a major step forward.
While the Jaguars have winnable games against the Jets, Giants and twice against Houston, they do play the NFC East and ultra-competitive AFC West. Don’t expect the Jaguars to compete for a playoff spot but improving their three-win season is a near guarantee.

The Jaguars have more talent obviously with their draft haul especially on defense but the overall depth is a concern. Pederson is a massive upgrade over Urban Meyer but it’s not going to be an overnight fix. However, going from one of the worst coaches in NFL history to a former Super Bowl winner should buy the Jaguars a few more wins.
