Game Preview
The final weekend of the season kicks off a playoff push for both the Atlanta Braves and the Kansas City Royals, but only the Royals know the exact finish line.
Kansas City is looking to secure a playoff spot on Friday night as they face the Braves in the first game of a three-game interleague series featuring wild-card hopefuls.
Right-hander Brady Singer (9-12, 3.73 ERA) will take the mound for the Royals, while left-hander Max Fried (10-10, 3.42) starts for Atlanta.
The Royals wrapped up a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals with a 7-4 victory on Thursday, scoring three runs in the ninth inning. The Braves last played on Tuesday, winning 5-1 against the New York Mets before Hurricane Helene postponed the remaining two games of that series.
The sweep was crucial for the Royals (85-74), who snapped a seven-game losing streak earlier in the week and are on the verge of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2015.
With their recent performance, both the Royals and the Detroit Tigers (also 85-74) have seen their magic numbers for clinching a wild-card spot drop to one, following the Minnesota Twins’ 8-6 loss to the Miami Marlins in 13 innings.
"These past few weeks have made it tough for us," said Royals’ Adam Frazier, who delivered a pinch-hit, two-run single to break the tie in the ninth. "Winning three in a row here is big. If we can grab a couple more in Atlanta, we’ll be in a great position."
The rainouts have left the Braves (86-71) in control of their playoff fate. They sit one game behind the Mets (87-70) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (88-71), who are locked in a tight race for the last two National League wild-card spots.
If the Braves sweep the Royals, they could clinch a playoff spot on Monday during a doubleheader against the Mets. Atlanta leads the season series with New York 6-5, and a single win in the doubleheader would secure the tiebreaker.
Additionally, the Braves could secure a berth before the doubleheader if they sweep the Royals and either the Mets or Diamondbacks are swept this weekend by the Milwaukee Brewers or San Diego Padres, respectively. There’s a possibility that the doubleheader could be rendered unnecessary if playoff spots are already secured.
The two NL wild-card series are set to begin on Tuesday.
"It’s going to be an interesting situation," Braves manager Brian Snitker remarked, noting that the rotation for the weekend would be adjusted based on playoff implications. "We need to evaluate everything in light of the potential playoff ramifications."
Singer is looking to rebound after a recent loss where he allowed six runs over 5 1/3 innings in a 9-0 defeat to the San Francisco Giants last Saturday. He has struggled in his last six starts, posting an 0-4 record with a 6.19 ERA.
In his only start against the Braves on April 14, 2023, Singer gave up eight runs in five innings during a 10-3 loss.
Fried, on the other hand, secured a win on Saturday by allowing two runs (one earned) over six innings in a 6-2 victory against the Marlins. He has never faced the Royals in his career.
