Game Preview

Given Michael Lorenzen’s recent performances against the Guardians, the Kansas City Royals are well-positioned to potentially tie for the lead in the American League Central as they head into Tuesday’s matchup in Cleveland.

Lorenzen (7-6, 3.47 ERA), who is set to start for Kansas City on Tuesday, holds a 1.97 ERA in 11 career matchups (three as a starter) against the Guardians. Since 2022, he has elevated his game, delivering an exceptional 0.45 ERA over three starts against Cleveland, allowing just one run across 20 innings.

The Royals are optimistic that Lorenzen will maintain his strong form against Cleveland as they aim to equal the Guardians at the top of the AL Central standings.

On Monday, Kansas City clinched both games of a doubleheader against Cleveland. Bobby Witt Jr. hit a decisive solo homer in the eighth inning of the first game, leading to a 4-3 victory, followed by Salvador Perez’s two homers, including a grand slam, in a 9-4 triumph in the second game.

Perez, who went 7-for-11 over the last three games, expressed the team’s competitive spirit to Bally Sports Kansas City, stating, "We had to come here and win the first two games… We’re just focusing on winning every game."

After games on June 25, the Guardians held a nine-game advantage over the second-place Minnesota Twins in the AL Central, with Kansas City 10 games behind. Since then, Cleveland has recorded a 24-31 record, bringing the Royals within one game of the lead.

Despite the setbacks on Monday, Guardians’ first-year manager Stephen Vogt remains optimistic. "They’re professionals; they know how to rebound from a tough day. This group won’t get discouraged—it’s not who they are. They are well aware of our situation," Vogt commented.

For Tuesday’s game, the Guardians will rely on right-hander Gavin Williams (2-6, 5.13 ERA), who is coming off two consecutive losses, including a recent defeat to the New York Yankees where he allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Williams has a strong record against Kansas City, boasting a 1.62 ERA in three starts, though he hasn’t faced them this season.

The Royals have secured six out of eight games against Cleveland in 2024. After this series wraps up on Wednesday, they are scheduled for another three-game series starting next Monday.

Kansas City infielder Maikel Garcia summed up their approach: "Focus on the basics and outscore them. We’ve faced the Guardians many times and are familiar with their capabilities."
