Game Preview
Kansas City and Detroit approached the trade deadline with contrasting strategies.
In their push for the playoffs, the Royals bolstered their roster with three relievers and a utility infielder. Meanwhile, the Tigers opted for a sell-off, trading away four veterans and bringing in seven minor league prospects.
As the Royals, now in a near-tie for the second American League wild-card spot, face the struggling Tigers in a four-game series starting Thursday night, they do so with an upgraded lineup. The Royals recently added relievers Lucas Erceg and Hunter Harvey, starter Michael Lorenzen, and infielder Paul DeJong. Erceg delivered a scoreless inning, and DeJong contributed a hit and a run in the Royals’ sweep of the Chicago White Sox.
"We’re working to build a farm system that supports our major league team both in trades and on the field. We’re also focused on winning now," Royals GM J.J. Picollo stated. "Our team is well-positioned, and the bullpen upgrades should benefit us in 2024 and beyond."
Conversely, the Tigers dealt catcher Carson Kelly, outfielder Mark Canha, starter Jack Flaherty, and reliever Andrew Chafin, opting to lean on a less experienced roster for the rest of the season.
Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris remarked, "We believe the young talent we’ve acquired will be crucial for future success."
The newly acquired prospects won’t be joining the roster immediately. Detroit has lost three consecutive games and six of their last eight. With a gap of eight games from the final AL wild-card spot and All-Star Riley Greene on the injured list with a hamstring strain, the Tigers are struggling.
Rookie Keider Montero (1-4, 6.38 ERA) will start the series opener for Detroit. Montero has struggled recently, allowing five earned runs in each of his last three starts, including a five-inning appearance against Minnesota in which he gave up three home runs.
