Game Preview
The Minnesota Twins aim to rebound from two straight defeats as they host the Kansas City Royals on Monday night to kick off a three-game series in Minneapolis.
The Twins currently lead the Royals by half a game for second place in the American League Central. Both teams trail the Cleveland Guardians, who narrowly defeated Minnesota 5-3 on Sunday.
Twins outfielder Byron Buxton expressed confidence despite the recent losses, emphasizing that the series against the Guardians is just one part of the season.
"One series doesn’t define us," Buxton said. "There are still seven weeks left. This series doesn’t make or break our season."
Kansas City, meanwhile, seeks to extend its winning streak as it embarks on a six-game road trip, starting with three games against the Twins and continuing with three against the Cincinnati Reds. The Royals are coming off an 8-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.
Royals right-hander Brady Singer (8-7, 3.03 ERA) will make his 24th start of the season. He has struck out 121 batters in 130 2/3 innings but is looking to recover from a rough outing in his previous game where he gave up four runs on 10 hits against the Boston Red Sox.
Singer has a 3-6 record with a 5.18 ERA in 12 career starts against Minnesota.
The Twins will counter with Pablo Lopez (10-8, 4.74 ERA), also making his 24th start. Lopez has recorded 144 strikeouts in 129 innings. He, too, is coming off a loss, having allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings against the Chicago Cubs.
Lopez boasts a 4-1 record and a 2.41 ERA in five career starts against the Royals, including a win on Opening Day this season.
The Royals hope to reintegrate second baseman Michael Massey, who was scratched from Saturday’s lineup due to low-back tightness. Massey has struggled with back issues and has been on the injured list twice this season.
“We’ll see how he feels,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “It could resolve quickly, but we just don’t know.”
The Royals will be without reliever Hunter Harvey, who has been placed on the 15-day IL due to mid-back tightness. Reliever Carlos Hernandez has been promoted from Triple-A Omaha to fill Harvey’s spot.
Meanwhile, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli noted that Byron Buxton, who hit two home runs on Sunday, is in good form. Buxton has 16 homers and 49 RBIs this season.
“Buxton has been swinging well and feels good physically,” Baldelli said.
