The Kansas City Chiefs will look to shake off a disappointing end of their 2021 season when they inexplicably lost to the Cincinnati Bengals in overtime in the AFC Championship game. It was definitely a setback and this offseason hasn’t been particularly great either. The Chiefs decided they wouldn’t pay WR Tyreek Hill and traded their best receiver to the Miami Dolphins for a load of draft picks and are now without a pass catcher anywhere near Hill’s talent level. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes will still rely on TE Travis Kelce but at 32, his best years are surely behind him.
Mecole Hardman should thrive in his fourth season and the Chiefs have added two veteran pass catchers in Marquez Valdes-Scantling and former Steeler JuJu Smith-Shuster. All three won’t match Hill’s franchise record 111 catches last season but Mahomes will have an array of weapons he didn’t have in the past. The Chiefs will also possibly look to emphasize the rushing attack which could get other teams out of the cover-2 shell thus creating more liberties for Mahomes and his receivers. Clyde Edwards-Helaire returns in the backfield along with newly signed Ronald Jones.
Defensively, the Chiefs were mediocre at best with their unit and they needed to inject some new blood. Kansas City drafted seven defensive players this year. CB Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis are poised to start right away at cornerback and defensive end respectively. Safety Bryan Cook and linebacker Leo Chenal should push for playing time. With Tyrann Mathieu on to greener pastures, the Chiefs found a potential replacement in Justin Reid, who was signed away from Houston. The newcomers are going to step up and in the AFC West as the challenges will be real.
Apart from playing six gruesome games within their division, the Chiefs will also have to battle the Bills, Bengals, Rams, 49ers, Cardinals, Colts, Titans and the Buccaneers. Ouch!

The Bottom Line:
Barring major injuries, the Chiefs should be in the thick of things of yet another AFC West title run. While the offense should still be a force to reckon with, the defensive unit hasn’t yet to be battle-tested. Plus, their schedule is brutal and they will be playing their first 9 games against teams that combined for almost 11 wins last season including 4 division champions.
Last year’s record: 12-5
My Prediction: 11-6
