Detroit Tigers Betting Preview

Charlie Morton’s first start in a Detroit uniform was sharp, six innings, one run, four hits, six strikeouts, but a no-decision thanks to zero run support in a 2-0 loss to Philadelphia. At 41 years old, Morton may be one of MLB’s oldest arms, but his breaking ball and changeup still have bite.

The Tigers grabbed him from Baltimore before the trade deadline, banking on his experience to stabilize their playoff push in the AL Central. Morton has surrendered three or fewer runs in 10 of his last 12 outings and owns a solid 6-2 career mark with a 3.34 ERA against the Angels.

Detroit’s lineup came alive late in Friday’s opener, with Matt Vierling delivering a pinch-hit, three-run blast to secure a 6-5 comeback win, his first homer of the season after battling shoulder injuries.

Los Angeles Angels Betting Preview

The Angels turn to Yusei Kikuchi, who was excellent his last time out—six innings, one run, and seven strikeouts in a win over Tampa Bay. The problem? Kikuchi has been far less effective against Detroit historically, with a 5.82 ERA in seven career starts.

In Friday’s loss, Los Angeles nearly spoiled the Tigers’ night, smacking back-to-back homers off ace Tarik Skubal to take a fifth-inning lead before the bullpen imploded. Mike Trout is still two homers away from the 400 milestone, and every at-bat he takes draws extra eyes.

The Angels have the power to strike quickly, but their bullpen’s inconsistency continues to undermine late-game leads.

Betting Outlook & Prediction

Morton’s steady veteran presence, combined with Detroit’s home-field edge and Kikuchi’s shaky track record against the Tigers, tips the scale toward the home side. Expect both starters to keep things close early, but Detroit’s offense to break through late.

Score Prediction: Tigers 5, Angels 3
Pick: Detroit (-135)
Total: Under 8.5 (-111)  – two in-form starters could keep the scoring modest.
