Game Preview
The Kansas City Royals aim to secure their first home series win in a month as they host the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night. Their last victory at home came during a sweep against the Chicago White Sox from July 19-21.
Recent trade-deadline acquisitions have bolstered the Royals’ playoff ambitions. Right-hander Michael Lorenzen has performed well in two of his three starts, while infielder Paul DeJong has contributed three home runs since joining the team. Kansas City also looks forward to the impact of new bullpen additions Hunter Harvey and Lucas Erceg.
Erceg has already made a significant impression, pitching 9 1/3 scoreless innings and stranding all 11 inherited runners while often taking on high-leverage situations. He has recorded six holds and two saves in eight appearances. "He’s been outstanding," Royals general manager J.J. Picollo noted.
Harvey, who has had mixed results, is making progress after dealing with mid-back tightness and is eligible to return on Friday. "We got good news on Hunter," Picollo said. "His symptoms are resolving."
In a recent boost for the team, John Schreiber was activated from the injured list and earned the save in Monday’s 5-3 win over the Angels. Picollo emphasized Schreiber’s importance to the team’s early-season success.
On the mound for the Royals will be Lorenzen (6-6, 3.68 ERA), who has allowed only one run in 5 2/3 innings in two of his last three starts. He earned his first win for Kansas City last Friday in a 7-1 victory against Cincinnati. In his career against the Angels, Lorenzen has a record of 1-3 with a 5.13 ERA over eight appearances.
The Angels will be recalling right-hander Johnny Cueto for his season debut, marking his return to the stadium where he helped the Royals clinch the 2015 World Series. The 38-year-old veteran is 3-0 in four starts for Triple-A Salt Lake City. "He can pitch," said Angels manager Ron Washington. "He may not be the Johnny Cueto of five, six, seven, eight years ago, but he has knowledge and wisdom."
Cueto last faced the Royals on September 1, 2022, allowing one run in 5 1/3 innings while with the White Sox. He holds a 2-3 record with a 3.43 ERA in seven career outings against Kansas City.
After a strong offensive showing in Tuesday’s 9-5 win over the Royals, where they recorded 11 hits, Washington expressed optimism about continuing this momentum. "It’s nice when you score runs," he said. "We’ve been having trouble doing it."
