Game Preview

Veteran left-hander Clayton Kershaw will aim to extend his success in Milwaukee when the Los Angeles Dodgers begin a four-game series against the Brewers on Monday night, showcasing a clash of division leaders.

Kershaw (0-2, 4.38 ERA) is set to face Milwaukee right-hander Freddy Peralta (7-6, 4.02 ERA) in this matchup.

The Brewers, leading the National League Central by 7 1/2 games over St. Louis, saw their five-game winning streak end with a 4-3 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday. Spencer Steer’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the seventh inning secured the win for the Reds. Brewers’ Joey Ortiz contributed with a two-run homer, his first since late June.

The Dodgers, who top the NL West by 3 1/2 games over Arizona and San Diego, completed a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 6-5 extra-innings win on Sunday. Enrique Hernandez tied the game with an RBI double, and Teoscar Hernandez delivered the walk-off hit.

Kershaw, recently returned from the 60-day injured list after offseason shoulder surgery, had a solid outing in his last start despite taking the loss. He pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits in a 6-2 defeat to Philadelphia.

"I think it’s another good step in the right direction," Kershaw remarked. "Now I’ve got to figure out how to maintain my pitch count and get through at least five innings."

Against the Brewers, Kershaw boasts a strong track record, holding an 8-5 record with a 2.92 ERA in 18 career starts, including a perfect 2-0 last season. He has been particularly dominant at Miller Park/American Family Field, with a 5-1 record and a 1.54 ERA in nine starts.

The Dodgers are expected to activate Mookie Betts from the injured list (left-hand fracture) for this game. Betts, out since June 17, is batting .304 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs.

On the Brewers’ side, Peralta, their top starter, has had an uneven season. He won his last start despite giving up four runs on eight hits, including a two-run homer, in an 8-5 victory over Atlanta.

"I feel good about today," Peralta said after the game. "The pitch to Riley was exactly where I wanted it, but he made a great swing."

Peralta has struggled with a 6.65 ERA in the first inning this season. In five career starts against the Dodgers, he is 2-1 with a 2.63 ERA.

Reliever Bryan Hudson, with a 1.60 ERA, might return from the injured list (left oblique) on Monday.
