Right-hander Jack Flaherty faces a challenging start with the Los Angeles Dodgers as they continue their three-game series against the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.
In Friday’s opener, the A’s secured a 6-5 win with homers from Shea Langeliers, Seth Brown, and Brent Rooker, extending their strong play. This defeat adds to the Dodgers’ recent struggles, with the team having gone 11-13 in July, prompting roster changes, including acquiring Flaherty (7-5, 2.95 ERA) from the Detroit Tigers.
Flaherty, a 28-year-old from Burbank, CA, had a strong finish to his tenure with the Tigers, allowing no more than two runs in seven of his final eight starts and posting a 1.77 ERA over that stretch. However, he has had difficulty against the A’s in his career, holding a 0-2 record and a 10.97 ERA in two starts, including a 7-1 loss in April where he gave up six runs.
Returning to his home state, Flaherty anticipates a warm reception in his Dodgers debut. Many Dodgers fans helped fill Oakland’s largest crowd of the season Friday, with Shohei Ohtani hitting a three-run homer to make it a close game.
Flaherty expressed his excitement about playing for his hometown team, saying it’s a special opportunity. Despite his impressive ERA, Flaherty has surrendered 15 home runs this season, and he’ll face a team that led the majors in home runs last month.
Miguel Andujar contributed to Oakland’s victory with an RBI triple, a key hit in the game. "Playing like this against the Dodgers is amazing," Andujar said. "Everybody came through, and I’m super happy."
On Saturday, rookie Mitch Spence (7-6, 4.47 ERA) will start for the A’s. Although he has never faced the Dodgers, Spence has recently excelled against their Los Angeles rivals, the Angels, winning his last two starts against them.
The Dodgers’ runs on Friday came solely from home runs, with Teoscar Hernandez and Ohtani contributing. Ohtani’s three RBIs bring his season total to 79, tying him with Rooker for fourth-most in the majors. Ohtani leads Rooker in home runs, 33 to 27.
