Game Preview
The San Francisco Giants will rely on their bullpen once again as they aim for a second straight victory over the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.
With only three healthy starting pitchers available, Giants manager Bob Melvin has utilized 11 different relievers, including two in the opener role, during recent wins against the Chicago Cubs earlier in the week. These bullpen efforts resulted in 5-4 and 5-1 victories, extending their winning streak to four out of five games.
Heading into the weekend, Melvin faces a similar situation, planning bullpen games for both Saturday and Sunday. Fortunately, Logan Webb’s strong seven-inning start on Friday allowed most of the relievers to rest, with only Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval seeing action in the late innings of a 5-3 win. Brett Wisely’s walk-off home run in the ninth spared the bullpen from extended work.
Earlier in the week against the Cubs, Melvin deployed Erik Miller and Randy Rodriguez as openers. Miller pitched a shutout inning before handing off to a bullpen crew, while Rodriguez managed 2 2/3 innings in front of multiple relievers called upon during the game.
