Game Preview
With the Los Angeles Dodgers grappling with injuries to their starting rotation, Clayton Kershaw’s return from offseason shoulder surgery has become even more pivotal for the team’s success.
Kershaw is set to continue his comeback on Sunday afternoon as the Dodgers play the final game of their three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Dodgers secured a 7-6 victory on Friday but fell 5-2 on Saturday, marking their third loss in four games.
Kershaw (1-2, 3.50 ERA) is coming off his best performance of the season, having limited the Milwaukee Brewers to one run on three hits over 5 2/3 innings in a 5-2 win on Monday. He struck out six and walked two while throwing 83 pitches.
"It’s been enjoyable to be back," Kershaw told Fox Sports. "I’ve made four starts now; you never know what to expect post-surgery, but I’m feeling great. I’m learning how to pitch again … even though my stuff isn’t what it once was. If I can tunnel my fastball and slider effectively and mix in a few curveballs, I think I’ll be successful."
The Dodgers are in need of such success after placing Tyler Glasnow on the 15-day injured list due to elbow tendinitis on Friday. They recalled Justin Wrobleski and Bobby Miller from Triple-A Oklahoma City to cover recent starts, but the duo has allowed eight runs in 9 2/3 innings.
Kershaw boasts a 10-6 record with a 3.00 ERA in 21 career starts against the Cardinals, excelling particularly against Tommy Pham, Paul Goldschmidt, and Willson Contreras.
The Cardinals ended a five-game losing streak with a win on Saturday and are aiming to re-enter the National League wild-card race.
"Either you rise to the occasion or you don’t," said Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol. "You play tough teams, and you either step up or face an early exit."
St. Louis will counter with right-hander Sonny Gray (11-7, 3.93 ERA), who is looking to rebound from a tough outing where he allowed six runs, including three homers, in five innings during a 6-1 loss to the Reds.
Gray has given up 17 home runs this season, up from eight last year. He holds a 1-3 record with a 3.31 ERA in six career starts against the Dodgers.
Additionally, Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman left Saturday’s game with a jammed middle finger. X-rays were negative, and he is considered day-to-day. Los Angeles also activated reliever Ryan Brasier from the 60-day injured list, sending pitcher Michael Grove to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
