Game Preview

The Los Angeles Dodgers are facing more pitching woes as they place Tyler Glasnow on the 15-day injured list with elbow tendinitis.

Glasnow, who was scheduled to start on Saturday in the second game of a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals, has been replaced by Bobby Miller (1-2, 8.07 ERA), who will return from Triple-A Oklahoma City for the start.

With Glasnow (9-6, 3.49 ERA) joining other Dodgers pitchers—Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, Emmet Sheehan, and River Ryan—on the IL, the team has been scrambling for solutions.

Rookie Justin Wrobleski, who was promoted for Friday’s game, secured his first major league win as the Dodgers narrowly defeated the Cardinals 7-6, thanks to Kevin Kiermaier’s four-RBI performance. Wrobleski’s promotion was initially intended to provide Glasnow with extra rest, but Glasnow’s recent elbow soreness led to a reassessment.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts mentioned that Glasnow wanted to pitch despite the discomfort, but the team decided against risking further injury. Roberts noted he would have been anxious watching Glasnow, so they decided to shut him down for at least two starts.

The Dodgers had hinted at this move by pulling Miller from his scheduled start for Oklahoma City on Thursday. “We wanted to keep Bobby available in case we needed him,” Roberts explained. Miller, who has been dealing with shoulder issues, has a 0-1 record with a 5.82 ERA in five Triple-A starts this season.

In his only previous career appearance against the Cardinals on March 29, Miller pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and struck out 11.

While the Dodgers have won six of their last eight games, the Cardinals are struggling, having lost five straight and falling two games under .500 for the first time since June 12.

Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt stated, “Our goal isn’t to just be .500. We aim to make the playoffs and that remains our focus.”

St. Louis will counter with Andre Pallante (4-6, 4.21 ERA), who recently allowed two runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings against the Kansas City Royals. Pallante has allowed one earned run or fewer in four of his last seven starts but has struggled with walks, issuing 14 while striking out 29.

Pallante faced the Dodgers twice in relief in March, giving up three runs on three hits over three innings. His career numbers against Los Angeles include a 5.06 ERA in four relief appearances.

The Cardinals are embarking on a challenging stretch of 22 games against teams with winning records. After Friday’s loss, they are now 10 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central and four games out of the final NL wild-card spot.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol acknowledged the team’s fatigue but emphasized their commitment: “Some guys are feeling the strain, but we’ll keep giving our best effort. We’ve been in tough spots before.”
