Game Preview
The Las Vegas Aces and Indiana Fever, both already secured in their playoff spots, face off in Indianapolis on Wednesday to vie for better seeding.
Both squads displayed tremendous comebacks in their recent matches.
The Aces, currently fourth in the standings at 22-13, nearly overcame a 20-point deficit against the New York Liberty, eventually losing 75-71 on Sunday. They managed this without A’ja Wilson, an MVP frontrunner sidelined with a leg injury and day-to-day status.
"We’re a resilient group. We know how to take a hit," Aces head coach Becky Hammon remarked. "I give my team a lot of credit for their fight, sticking together when it got hard, when it got ugly."
Las Vegas rallied with a 25-6 run to take the lead momentarily before their streak of four wins was snapped.
"Our bench coming in, the ball moved and good things happened," Hammon said. "They got stops, gave us a chance to crawl back in there and stick our nose in where probably people didn’t think it was going to be."
Kelsey Plum led the Aces with 25 points and six assists, with Jackie Young and Alysha Clark contributing significantly.
Meanwhile, the sixth-ranked Fever (19-17) made a dramatic recovery from a 16-point deficit to beat the Atlanta Dream 104-100 in overtime on Sunday.
"I’m proud of us," stated Caitlin Clark, who tallied 26 points and clinched the win with late free throws. "I thought we chipped away, we were resilient. We really executed when it mattered most."
The Fever sharpened their play, reducing turnovers significantly in the second half compared to the first.
Indiana’s season trajectory improved markedly after a sluggish 1-8 start, winning 18 of their next 27 games.
"I think (resilience is) one of the biggest ways that we’ve improved over the course of the year," Clark noted, "probably since a little bit before the start of the Olympic break and definitely here in the second half."
