Game Preview
Jorge Soler, the former World Series MVP, returns to Atlanta for the first time since rejoining the Braves when they start a four-game series against the revamped Miami Marlins on Thursday.
Soler, who famously hit a home run out of Minute Maid Park in 2021 to help Atlanta win the World Series, was reacquired from the Giants at the trade deadline. He was in the lineup Wednesday when the Braves defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 6-2 in their series finale.
The Marlins, who won 6-2 against Tampa Bay on Wednesday to split their two-game series, were active at the trade deadline, making eight trades with seven teams. They acquired eight players who rank among their top 20 prospects according to MLB Pipeline.
The Braves are 5-1 against the Marlins this season, although their last matchup was in April.
Friday’s game will feature a matchup of right-handers: Atlanta’s Charlie Morton (5-6, 4.16 ERA) and Miami’s Max Meyer (2-0, 3.00 ERA).
Morton, who struggled in July and took a loss against the Mets last Friday, has faced the Marlins 25 times in his career, posting a 13-6 record with a 4.14 ERA. He defeated Miami on April 14, despite allowing six runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Meyer, making his fifth start of the season, did not get a decision in his last outing against Tampa Bay but won his April 13 start against Atlanta, allowing just one run over six innings.
Soler, who was batting .240 with 12 home runs for the Giants before his return to Atlanta, will play right field and aims to bolster an Atlanta lineup missing Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ozzie Albies. Right-handed reliever Luke Jackson, also acquired in the trade, will add depth to the bullpen.
Atlanta manager Brian Snitker expressed optimism about Soler and Jackson’s return, noting their previous success with the team.
