Game Preview
The Minnesota Twins find themselves in a challenging situation regarding their playoff prospects, but they are not out of contention yet.
Minnesota (81-75) hopes to boost its chances as they kick off a three-game series against the Miami Marlins (57-99) on Tuesday night in Minneapolis. The Twins enter the series just one game behind the Detroit Tigers for the final American League wild-card spot.
Manager Rocco Baldelli is confident in his team’s ability to make a playoff push, though he expressed frustration after the Twins dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox, resulting in an 11-22 record since August 18.
In Sunday’s doubleheader, the Twins lost Game 1 8-1 and Game 2 9-3, marking their seventh consecutive game without exceeding four runs.
"We’re struggling, and we’re not scoring enough runs," Baldelli said. "We’re searching for that crucial hit. It occupies my thoughts day and night, and I know our hitters and coaching staff feel the same way."
Returning home to face the Marlins presents an opportunity for Baldelli and his squad.
"We need to win on Tuesday," Baldelli emphasized. "We’ll use the day off to recharge and come back ready to play with enthusiasm. Our players are eager to make a run for the playoffs—that’s our goal."
On the other hand, Miami is looking to play the spoiler role. The Marlins are trying to avoid their fourth 100-loss season in franchise history and their first since 2019.
Miami has lost two consecutive games, four of its last five, and ten of their last thirteen.
Manager Skip Schumaker may be facing his final week with the team he has led for the past two seasons. Schumaker, who won National League Manager of the Year in 2023, could be a candidate for other managerial roles this offseason.
While he refrained from discussing his future in detail, Schumaker acknowledged the possibility of moving on from Miami.
"It’s a strange time in my career," Schumaker reflected. "I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to manage the Miami Marlins, even if it was just for a couple of years. There have been many lessons learned and plenty of ups and downs, but it’s been an exciting journey. I’ve built lasting friendships here."
The Twins will start right-hander Bailey Ober (12-7, 3.84 ERA) in the series opener. Ober has tallied 180 strikeouts in 168 2/3 innings this season and will be making his first career start against the Marlins.
The Marlins will counter with left-hander Ryan Weathers (3-6, 3.94), the son of former big-league pitcher David Weathers, who won 73 games in his career. The younger Weathers is seeking his first victory since May 26 against the Arizona Diamondbacks and has never faced the Twins in his career.
