Marlins vs Cardinals: Expect Fireworks, Bloopers and Probably too Many Walks

Welcome to the high-stakes showdown between the “kind-of-winning” St. Louis Cardinals and the “trying really hard” Miami Marlins. Both teams are barely sniffing the playoff picture, but that won’t stop them from treating Wednesday’s game like it’s Game 7 of the World Series at least, that’s what we hope.

St. Louis Cardinals: Protecting Home Turf (Sort Of)

The Cardinals are 32-23 at Busch Stadium, which is impressive if you ignore the fact that they have a tendency to give fans mild heart attacks with late-inning collapses. They’ve been swinging the bats at a respectable .250 clip sixth in the NL, which basically means they’re slightly above average but not enough to scare anyone.

Alec Burleson is their guy right now, rocking a .286 average, 19 doubles, and 14 bombs. He’s been the steady hand in an otherwise inconsistent lineup. Meanwhile, Masyn Winn has been quietly clutch, going 12-for-37 with seven RBIs over his last 10 games. If the Cards want to win this series, they need to let Burleson and Winn do their thing and maybe pray that Miles Mikolas doesn’t give up four runs before the fifth inning.

Miami Marlins: Road Dogs on a Mission

The Marlins are 27-26 on the road, which is as middle-of-the-pack as it gets. Their team batting average is slightly better than the Cardinals at .252, which means they win the “participation trophy” of consistency. Xavier Edwards has been doing work with 16 doubles, while Kyle Stowers has been crushing over his last 10 games (13 hits, 5 doubles, 4 homers).

The problem? Cal Quantrill. With a 3-8 record and a 5.05 ERA, Quantrill’s been pitching like someone who just realized they left the stove on at home. If he doesn’t find his groove early, Miami’s bullpen will be throwing the kitchen sink by the 4th inning.

Score Prediction

The Cards have home-field advantage, the slightly better bats, and just enough pitching to squeak by. But expect some chaos before it’s over.

Final Score Prediction:  Cardinals 5, Marlins 4
Bets Bet: St. Louis (-149)
Total:  Over 8.5 (-116)
