Game Preview

Milwaukee’s Colin Rea will take the mound as the Brewers open a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. Instead of facing Atlanta’s ace Chris Sale, the Brewers will see right-hander Bryce Elder (2-4, 5.67 ERA), who was recalled from Triple-A to start the series opener.

The Braves, currently second in the NL East, won two of three games against the Brewers last week and hold a 5-1 record against Milwaukee from 2023.

Rea (9-3, 3.59 ERA) pitched against the Braves last Monday, earning no decision after allowing two runs over 5 1/3 innings. In his four career starts against Atlanta, Rea holds a 1-0 record with a 4.70 ERA. This season, he has delivered six quality starts and limited opponents to a .233 batting average.

Elder was recalled to replace Reynaldo Lopez, who is sidelined with forearm inflammation. Elder’s last recall in June saw him deliver a strong outing against the Brewers, pitching 6 1/3 innings with one run allowed before being sent back to Triple-A.

Both teams are coming off challenging weekends. The Braves dropped their last two games after a split series with Miami, while the Brewers lost their final two games against Washington and have dropped four of their last five.

Despite these setbacks, Milwaukee’s Rhys Hoskins is enjoying a 10-game hitting streak, batting .278 with four home runs and nine RBIs during this stretch. Conversely, Atlanta’s offense struggled in their recent series against Miami, including a rare shutout at home on Sunday.
