Game Preview

Two in-form teams clash at Wrigley Field on Monday as the Chicago Cubs host the Minnesota Twins for the start of a three-game series.

The Twins, riding a four-game winning streak and a recent sweep of the struggling Chicago White Sox, bring a powerful offense into the matchup. During their streak, Minnesota has averaged 9.25 runs per game, most recently securing a 13-7 victory. Willi Castro and Jose Miranda each had three hits, and Royce Lewis drove in three runs to support their offense.

Miranda, hitting .324 this season, will leave Target Field, where he’s amassed 13 RBIs in the last 17 games. The Twins, with 544 runs scored, are tied with the Boston Red Sox for fifth place in the majors.

To ease the burden on a taxed bullpen, rookie right-hander David Festa (1-2, 6.98 ERA) will take the mound. In his fourth career start, Festa is coming off a solid performance on July 30 against the Mets, where he allowed two runs in five innings. He has not faced the Cubs before.

The Cubs, who have won four of their last five games, are trying to close the gap on the Arizona Diamondbacks for the third NL wild-card spot. Chicago beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 on Sunday, thanks to a quality start from Justin Steele and home runs from Mike Tauchman and Miguel Amaya. The Cubs are currently six games behind the Diamondbacks, with four teams between them and the final playoff spot.
