Game Preview

The Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays are set to wrap up their four-game set with an early game in St. Petersburg, Fla., showcasing two pitchers who have seen divergent paths lately.

Tampa Bay (69-70) secured the season series, taking four out of six games, after exploding for eight runs in a single inning on Wednesday—their most productive inning of the year— to clinch an 8-0 lead.

In that pivotal fourth inning, the Rays batted around, with Taylor Walls driving in two runs and Ben Rortvedt, Jose Caballero, and Jonny DeLuca each adding RBIs. Yandy Diaz capped the outburst with a two-run homer that traveled 423 feet to center field.

"It’s contagious," Walls commented, noting the team’s momentum. "When everyone starts hitting well, you feel like you’re up next."

The Twins (75-64) aim to even the series in Thursday’s game, sending Pablo Lopez (13-8, 4.05 ERA) to the mound. Lopez has hit his stride, securing five victories in his last seven starts since July 26, including a 20 2/3 innings scoreless streak over his last three outings.

During his last start—a 2-0 victory against Toronto—Lopez effectively induced groundouts, managing the game efficiently without relying on strikeouts.

"Pablo Day turned out great for us," Lopez reflected. "Facing hitters who don’t strike out much means focusing on quality pitches that can end the at-bat early."

Manager Rocco Baldelli praised Lopez’s approach, noting, "It speeds up the game."

Lopez, however, historically struggles against Tampa, holding a 1-3 record and a 4.05 ERA in seven career starts against them.

On the mound for Tampa will be Taj Bradley (6-9, 4.35), whose early season promise has recently dimmed. Named AL Pitcher of the Month in July, Bradley has since faltered, posting a 0-4 record and a 10.41 ERA in August as opponents hit .366 against him.

Bradley and the Rays are eager to correct course, especially after his performance slipped following his excellent July.

This final game between the Twins and Rays could have been a highlight match earlier in the season, but Bradley’s recent struggles remove some of the luster.
