Game Preview
Most teams aren’t concerned about fatigue this early in the season, but the Minnesota Wild face an early test. Less than a day after battling through a 5-4 shootout loss to the Seattle Kraken, they’ll hit the road to take on the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday night.
This matchup marks the start of a seven-game road trip for Minnesota, who went 1-0-1 at home to open the season. Despite a late lead on Saturday, the Wild were forced into overtime after a Jared McCann goal tied it up with just over three minutes remaining, with Seattle eventually winning in the shootout.
Wild forward Marcus Foligno said the team isn’t discouraged by the loss. "You can’t be upset with the effort. It’s tough to lose that extra point, but if we bring this game to Winnipeg, we’ll hopefully get a positive result," he said.
Winnipeg, meanwhile, is chasing its third straight win. After a 6-0 blowout against the Oilers to start the season, they followed up with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. Mark Scheifele scored both goals in that win, reaching a milestone of 300 career goals for the franchise.
"It’s humbling and pretty wild to think about," Scheifele said, crediting his success to the teammates he’s played alongside.
For this game, Filip Gustavsson is expected to start in goal for Minnesota. He won the Wild’s opener and has a strong record against the Jets, going 4-1-0 with a 1.71 GAA in his career. However, the team could be without key forward Joel Eriksson Ek, who was injured on Saturday after taking an elbow to the face.
Connor Hellebuyck will likely be in goal for Winnipeg, coming off a stellar start to the season with a 0.50 GAA and a .982 save percentage through two games. His career record against Minnesota stands at 12-10-2, with a 2.71 GAA.
Both teams are coming in with strong starts, but the quick turnaround and Eriksson Ek’s potential absence could give Winnipeg the edge.
