There is nothing subtle about the Minnesota Timberwolves plans to become a championship level team. They mortgaged their future for the rest of the decade in order to acquire 30-year-old Rudy Gobert from the Utah Jazz.
For a team that is under new ownership and hasn’t won a playoff series in almost 20 years, it was a bold, expensive and necessary move.
A starting four of C Gobert, PF Karl-Anthony Towns, SG Anthony Edwards and PG D’Angelo Russell along with unselfish players like Jaden McDaniels or Kyle Anderson at the 3-spot makes for an elite group on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.
The depth at center and point guard are especially thin. They are hoping that rookie guard Wendell Moore Jr. can bring some of his Duke pedigree and ability to distribute and shoot long-range and be an early contributor.
This team seems poised to make some noise in the regular season and with a little more tweaking or growth from their reserves, win at least a round or two come playoff time.

The wins should come early and often, even as they adjust to playing with one other. Having alongside Gobert to play monster defensive minutes also makes Anthony-Towns a solid long shot pick as MVP. The Wolves are the upstart challenging the very best teams in a highly competitive West. Not quite title worthy, but not far off.
