Game Preview
The Washington Capitals are riding a hot streak with six wins in their last seven games, while the Montreal Canadiens are reeling from a tough 8-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken, marking their fifth defeat in seven outings (2-4-1).
On Thursday, Washington will look to keep its winning momentum as they host the slumping Canadiens. The Capitals earned their fourth straight home win by besting the New York Rangers 5-3 on Tuesday, powered by Alex Ovechkin’s two first-period goals. With 857 career goals, Ovechkin is now just 38 goals away from Gretzky’s all-time record.
"Ovi was fantastic tonight," said Capitals coach Spencer Carbery. "He was skating, controlling the puck, and looked confident."
In Tuesday’s game, Ovechkin’s line shined, with Aliaksei Protas contributing a goal and two assists and Dylan Strome adding two assists as well. The Capitals also showed defensive strength, holding the Rangers to just 19 shots, their second time limiting an opponent to under 20 this season.
Meanwhile, Montreal faces pressure to rebound after falling behind 4-0 within the first 10 minutes of Tuesday’s game, much to the frustration of the home crowd. Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki’s seven-game point streak ended, and he acknowledged the slow start: "You’re down 4-0 ten minutes in … it’s tough to move on from that."
One bright spot for the Canadiens was Cole Caufield, who scored in his third consecutive game, assisted by Juraj Slafkovsky, who returned from injury. Montreal will need Caufield and Suzuki to fire on all cylinders to shake up Washington’s momentum and pull off an upset.
