Game Preview

The New Jersey Devils are already surging ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes early in the season, setting the stage for their matchup Tuesday night in Raleigh, N.C.

The Devils boast a 4-1-0 start, while the Hurricanes have only played one game—a 4-1 home loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday. Carolina was supposed to play again Saturday in Tampa, but Hurricane Milton forced a postponement, leaving the Hurricanes with more time to reflect on their rough opener.

"Usually, you just want to get back out there after a game like that," said Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal.

While Carolina has been in a holding pattern, New Jersey has been busy racking up wins. One standout performance came from rookie Seamus Casey, who notched his third goal of the season in the Devils’ 3-0 victory over the Utah Hockey Club on Monday.

"I’m not used to being a goal-scorer, so having three already is a nice surprise," Casey said. "I’m just keeping things simple and taking my chances."

Jack Hughes has yet to score, but he’s made his presence felt with three assists and 15 shots on goal. "Jack will find the back of the net soon, but he’s already building a solid game defensively," said Devils coach Sheldon Keefe.

New Jersey has played three games since returning from Prague, where they split a two-game series with Buffalo. After a bounce-back 5-3 win against Washington on Saturday, they secured another victory on Monday. Former Hurricane Stefan Noesen has been key for the Devils, picking up points in four of their five games, all resulting in wins.

In contrast, the Hurricanes’ opener was marked by two power-play goals from Tampa Bay and a pair of empty-netters. "We weren’t sharp on the penalty kill," Staal admitted. "One mistake can make the difference, and we have to improve."

The Hurricanes now face a Devils squad already in mid-season form. "It’s not an ideal situation," said Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour. "You want to get into a rhythm early, but we’ll find it eventually. Hopefully, sooner than later."

Despite the extra time between games, Brind’Amour said the team hasn’t focused on any specific area of improvement, noting, "We need to get better across the board."

Carolina is expected to start Pyotr Kochetkov in net on Tuesday, after Frederik Andersen got the nod in the opener. Tuesday’s contest will be the Hurricanes’ last home game for over two weeks, as the team hits the road during the North Carolina State Fair, held near their arena.
