A new era has begun in New Orleans. After future hall-of-famer quarterback Drew Brees retired in 2020, head coach Sean Payton has now joined him after he stepped down after last season. With the two icons now gone, the greatest run in Saints history is officially over. Perhaps it won’t take too long to start a new one. Payton built a solid foundation and it will be time to see if his inheritor can keep it standing. New head coach Dennis Allen, who failed miserably in his first try at the position with the Raiders ten years ago, has rebuilt his reputation as Payton’s top defensive lieutenant. While few question his acumen as a defensive guru, some will still have in mind his 8-28 record in two seasons with Oakland. Quarterback Jameis Winston replaced Brees at the position with mixed results in 2021.
Winston threw for only 167.1 yards per game last season but did throw for 14 touchdowns to just 3 interceptions before he was ultimately lost for the season with a torn ACL in his seventh game. The Taysom Hill experiment at the QB position is apparently over as the versatile player is focusing on tight end so the job is Winston’s. Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton was brought in as insurance. The Saints expect WR Michael Thomas to finally be ready to go after the embattled star missed most of the last two seasons with an ankle injury. His return represents a huge upgrade for a receiving corps that clearly struggled in his absence. Add first-round rookie Chris Olave and five-time pro bowler Jarvis Landry to the mix and the unit figures to be far more explosive.
Still, there are concerns at the running back position with star Alvin Kamara facing disciplinary action after his offseason arrest on suspicion of battery. The good news is that if suspended, Kamara may not serve his suspension until 2023. On the defensive side, Allen will retain calling-duties and the Saints should once again field a formidable ensemble. With a revamped and improved secondary, the Saints also possess a dynamic pash rush headed by Cameron Jordan, who has become one of the better defensive ends in the league. Marcus Davenport may one day hold that distinction as the end logged in 9 sacks in only 11 games last season. New Orleans has had a top-four run defense the past four years so expect that trend to continue in 2022.
While the Saints do get to tangle with Carolina and Atlanta twice this year, they also have winnable games against the Seahawks, Browns and Steelers. However, they will be battle-tested twice against the Buccaneers and they have the Vikings, Cardinals, Bengals, Raiders, Ravens, Rams and the 49ers on their slate.

The Bottom Line:
A 10-win season seems reasonable for the Saints with a second-place finish in the NFC South behind Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. With a top-ranked defense already in place, if the offense can get their act together and stay healthy, the Saints could be a surprising contender for a spot in the playoffs.
