Game Preview
Corbin Carroll has found his form just when the Arizona Diamondbacks needed it most, much to the dismay of the New York Mets.
Carroll launched three home runs in the first two games of their series, including a pivotal eighth-inning grand slam on Wednesday, propelling Arizona to an 8-5 win. This surge is a stark contrast to his earlier season struggles, having only two homers before July, despite his successful rookie campaign last year.
Now, Carroll has tallied 15 home runs since July 7, with the grand slam off Mets closer Edwin Diaz being particularly crucial. "I was aiming for at least a base hit to get us ahead, not swinging too hard, and fortunately, I connected well on a pitch down the middle," Carroll reflected on his approach.
Despite a rocky start to the season where his batting average hovered below .200 until June, Arizona’s manager Torey Lovullo noted Carroll’s resilience. "He stayed level-headed through the tough patches, and his hard work and determination have really paid off," Lovullo remarked following the win.
Arizona has been on a roll, winning 25 of their last 32 games, and currently leads the San Diego Padres by one game for the top NL wild-card spot.
The Mets, on the other hand, faced another setback as the loss widened their gap to four games behind the Atlanta Braves for the final NL wild-card slot.
Diaz, facing his second consecutive game-ending homer after a loss to the Padres, expressed his resolve: "It’s a tough defeat, but we need to continue playing strong."
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza showed confidence in Diaz despite the recent setbacks. "He’s experienced this before and I’m confident he’ll bounce back," Mendoza stated.
Looking ahead, Mets lefty David Peterson (8-1, 2.85 ERA) is set to start Thursday, carrying a three-game winning streak into the game. Peterson has posted a 1.71 ERA in August and aims to maintain his momentum following a strong performance against the Padres.
Conversely, Arizona’s Ryne Nelson (9-6, 4.29 ERA) is on a winning streak of his own, seeking his fifth consecutive victory. Despite his recent success, Nelson has struggled against the Mets, with a 15.95 ERA in two previous starts.
Key Mets hitters like Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor have had significant success against Nelson, adding an intriguing subplot to the upcoming game.
