Game Preview
Instead of taking a break, the New York Mets made a quick stop in St. Louis on Monday to catch up on a missed game, defeating the Cardinals 6-0. They now head to Denver for a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies starting Tuesday night.
The Mets will start right-hander Luis Severino (7-4, 3.93 ERA), while the Rockies will counter with lefty Kyle Freeland (3-4, 5.64 ERA).
Currently competing for one of the National League’s wild-card spots, the Mets are in a challenging phase of their 10-game road trip, which began with a 2-2 record. They have struggled with runners in scoring position, going 2-for-10 in such situations during a recent 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.
"We were always just one swing away," Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo remarked.
Severino arrived in Denver early to adjust to the high altitude, which is crucial since he has never pitched in Coors Field or faced the Rockies. Despite the challenge, he aims to build on Monday’s victory.
"This is the longest road trip I’ve ever seen," Severino said. "It’s going to be tough, but this is what we get paid for."
In contrast, Freeland is familiar with the Mets, holding a 2-1 record with a 2.52 ERA in five career games against them. Since returning from the injured list on June 23, he has posted a 3-1 record with a 2.91 ERA and delivered six quality starts. His latest performance was a strong seven-inning outing against the Angels.
Freeland worked on correcting a previous issue from his start against the Giants and is eager to continue his solid form.
"It’s a pretty easy correction for me," Freeland noted.
The Rockies return home after center fielder Brenton Doyle was named NL Player of the Month for July. Doyle hit .333 with 11 home runs, seven doubles, and 27 RBIs last month, leading the majors with 19 extra-base hits and impressing with his defense.
