Game Preview

The Milwaukee Brewers will host the New York Mets on Tuesday for the start of their National League wild-card series after an extra day of waiting to determine the matchup.

The Mets secured the No. 6 seed by winning the first game of a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves on Monday. The Braves claimed the No. 5 seed after winning the second game 3-0, setting up a matchup against the San Diego Padres in another wild-card series. The results from Monday eliminated the Arizona Diamondbacks from playoff contention, as they needed a sweep in the doubleheader to stay alive.

In the opening game, the Mets triumphed 8-7, thanks to Francisco Lindor’s two-run homer in the ninth inning. Despite scoring six runs in the eighth, the Braves briefly took a 7-6 lead before the Mets rallied.

"We’ve risen to the occasion and earned our playoff spot," said New York first baseman Pete Alonso. "This is a significant opportunity for us."

For Game 1, Freddy Peralta (11-9, 3.68 ERA) will take the mound for Milwaukee, while Luis Severino (11-7, 3.91) will pitch for the Mets.

The Brewers clinched the NL Central title with ten games left in the season and won five of their last seven games, finishing the season 5-1 against the Mets.

"This team doesn’t concern itself with who they face," said first-year Brewers manager Pat Murphy. "Our focus is on playing well and treating ourselves right."

Although this marks the Brewers’ sixth postseason appearance in seven years, they’ve struggled recently, going 1-8 in playoff games since the 2018 NLCS.

"We feel different this time," Peralta noted. "Everyone can sense where we are headed."

Peralta, now the ace of the rotation following Corbin Burnes’ trade, has excelled recently with a 2.48 ERA over his last seven starts, accumulating career highs in innings pitched and strikeouts.

Severino posted a 3.64 ERA in September but struggled in his last outing, allowing four runs in a loss to the Braves.

Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick is uncertain for the game after suffering a bone bruise in his hip but indicated he was feeling good during practice.
