Game Preview

The Milwaukee Brewers will rely on midseason addition Frankie Montas to prevent another postseason disappointment as they face the New York Mets on Wednesday in the second game of their National League wild-card series.

Montas (7-11, 4.84 ERA), a right-hander, will go against lefty Sean Manaea (12-6, 3.47).

The Mets, who secured their playoff spot by winning the first game of a makeup doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves on Monday, rallied twice to defeat the NL Central champion Brewers 8-4 in the series opener.

The sixth-seeded Mets took control with a five-run fifth inning against the Brewers’ bullpen. Luis Severino pitched six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits, and the Mets’ bullpen combined to retire the last 17 Brewers batters.

Jesse Winker, who struggled last season with a .199 average in 61 games for Milwaukee, drove in the Mets’ first two runs with a triple.

"They hit, we hit back," said Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. "They took the lead again, and we managed to respond and keep the pressure on them."

The Mets are aiming for their first postseason series win since sweeping the Chicago Cubs in the 2015 NL Championship Series.

The third-seeded Brewers, who won two of three against New York in their final regular-season series, are looking to snap a six-game postseason losing streak and improve upon their 1-10 playoff record since losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the 2018 NLCS. Last year, Milwaukee was swept in a wild-card series by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy is confident his team will rebound as they have throughout the season.

"This team has responded well to challenges," Murphy said. "We’ve been tested before, and we’ve come back strong."

Montas faced Manaea last Friday, when the Brewers won 8-4. Montas allowed two runs in four innings, while Manaea gave up six runs (five earned) in 3 2/3 innings.

Montas has a 5.06 ERA in three regular-season games against the Mets, including two starts, and is 1-1 with a 9.45 ERA in three postseason appearances.

Manaea, who had a 3.32 ERA in six September starts, has struggled in the playoffs, going 0-3 with a 15.26 ERA in three appearances.

"Once you get to the playoffs, it’s about the adrenaline and the fans," said J.D. Martinez, who had a two-run single in the decisive fifth inning for the Mets. "Everything else takes care of itself."
