Game Preview
Kyle Higashioka and Luis Campusano may appear to be just two average major league players individually, but together, they represent the top home run duo for the playoff-contending San Diego Padres. The Padres aim to secure their second consecutive victory over the visiting New York Mets on Saturday night in the third game of their four-game series.
In Friday’s 7-0 victory, Higashioka contributed significantly by driving in three runs and hitting his career-high 15th homer of the season in the second inning. When combined, Higashioka and Campusano have hit 23 home runs and accumulated 81 RBIs, despite neither player batting above .233. Their combined RBI total would also lead the team, surpassing Jurickson Profar’s 77.
"They’ve really added depth to the lineup," Padres manager Mike Shildt noted after Friday’s win. "Higgy came through with a big hit early and added another run later. Campy has also been productive and has helped catch for guys like (Dylan) Cease and (Martin) Perez, making them a solid combination."
While Higashioka has been the primary starter lately, Campusano made headlines on July 25 by catching Cease’s no-hitter, the second in franchise history.
This unexpected production near the bottom of the lineup has been crucial for the Padres, who have gone 23-8 since the All-Star break and currently sit just a half-game behind Arizona for the National League’s first wild-card spot.
On Saturday night, the Padres will send right-hander Michael King (11-6, 3.18 ERA) to the mound. King has won his last two starts, including a 5-3 win against Minnesota on Monday, where he allowed two runs over six innings while striking out six.
In five career appearances against New York—four of which were in relief—King has yet to record a decision but has maintained a 2.25 ERA with 15 strikeouts over 12 innings.
The Mets, on the other hand, will rely on left-hander David Peterson (7-1, 3.00) for a critical start after Paul Blackburn’s short outing of just 2 1/3 innings on Friday due to an injury from a line drive.
Peterson delivered a quality start in Monday’s 4-3 win over Baltimore, striking out eight and giving up only two earned runs over seven innings. However, he has lost both of his previous starts against San Diego, allowing six runs across 12 innings.
New York hopes for a lengthy outing from Peterson, especially after their bullpen covered 9 2/3 innings in the series’ first two games. Manager Carlos Mendoza had to rely on Ryne Stanek, Danny Young, and Adam Ottavino for multiple innings, which may impact their availability for Saturday.
Additionally, the Mets demoted Huascar Brazoban to Triple-A Syracuse after his ERA rose to 6.30 in nine games since being acquired from Miami at the trade deadline. "He’s probably being too hard on himself after a tough outing," Mendoza said. "This is more about resetting him because his stuff is good."
New York activated Dedniel Nunez from the injured list to take Brazoban’s place.
