Game Preview

After securing two consecutive shutouts, the New York Yankees aim to complete their series sweep against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon.

The Yankees (82-60) guaranteed their 32nd straight winning season following Saturday’s joint four-hitter by Clarke Schmidt and Nestor Cortes, leading to a 2-0 victory.

Conversely, the Cubs (72-70) faced their 15th shutout this season, marking their third in the last four games. They managed just one hit in Friday’s 3-0 series-opening defeat to the Yankees.

August saw Chicago rallying into playoff contention with an 18-8 record, but they’ve stumbled in September with a 2-4 record. They now trail the New York Mets by six games for the National League’s final wild-card slot.

“We believe we’re good enough to make the playoffs, but we must elevate our game and keep pushing,” said Cubs outfielder Ian Happ.

On the American League side, the first-place Yankees have an abundance of starting pitching options, especially after Schmidt and Luis Gil came off the injured list this weekend. Cortes shifted to a relief role on Saturday, expressing a preference for staying in the rotation.

“I embrace any challenge and will always give my best for the team, happy or not,” Cortes remarked. “Today I demonstrated I can handle any situation. If this is my role moving forward, I’ll adapt.”

Yankees manager Aaron Boone appreciates the additional healthy rotation options, citing recent solid performances. "Our starting pitchers have a combined 3.31 ERA over the last 26 starts, improving our staff overall,” he said.

The series concludes Sunday with Chicago’s Jameson Taillon (9-8, 3.66 ERA) dueling against New York’s Gerrit Cole (6-3, 3.65) on the mound.

Last Monday, Taillon delivered seven scoreless innings against Pittsburgh, though the Cubs ultimately fell 5-3. "He effectively managed hitters from both sides, inducing ground balls and benefiting from strong defense,” noted Cubs manager Craig Counsell.

At home this season, Taillon boasts a 2.64 ERA, significantly lower than his away record. He has a history of performing well against New York, holding a 1-0 record with a 2.70 ERA in two starts.

Cole celebrates his 34th birthday with a strong recent performance record, having conceded one run or fewer in four of his last five outings. Last Monday, he struck out nine over six innings against Texas, though he exited early due to a calf cramp. Cole has an impressive career record against the Cubs, with 11 wins, three losses, and a 2.61 ERA over 16 starts.
