Game Preview

The New York Yankees are aiming for a series victory against the Tampa Bay Rays in the decisive game of their three-game set on Thursday in St. Petersburg, Florida. This win would mark their first series victory in nearly a month. After their 2-1 win over the Rays on Wednesday night, the Yankees are hoping to carry this momentum into their critical weekend series against the Baltimore Orioles.

In recent weeks, the Yankees had a rough patch, winning the first three games of a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals on June 10-12 but then losing 17 of their next 23 games. On Wednesday, Trent Grisham was pivotal for the Yankees, driving in both runs and making a crucial defensive play in the eighth inning. The Yankees’ bullpen, starting with Tim Hill in the fifth inning, consistently managed to escape tough situations to secure the win.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised his team’s resilience, noting, "That was the ultimate bend but don’t break, playing the nickel defense on ’em there. Just a great job. A lot of big moments in that game, especially with what we’re going through and guys just coming through over and over again."

Conversely, the Rays struggled with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-10 and leaving 12 on base, leading to their fourth loss in five games. Rays manager Kevin Cash acknowledged their missed opportunities, saying, "We did a lot of good things and had some good at-bats to get guys on base. Just couldn’t find a way to get that big hit to get us back in the ballgame."

The Yankees will send left-hander Nestor Cortes (4-7, 3.41 ERA) to the mound on Thursday. Cortes is looking to end a three-start winless streak. In his last outings, he allowed three runs in road losses to the Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays before pitching six strong innings, giving up just a solo homer in a no-decision against the Boston Red Sox.

Cortes has been notably better at home with a 4-3 record and a 1.81 ERA in 10 starts compared to a 0-4 record and a 5.63 ERA in nine road starts. Against the Rays, Cortes holds a 2-4 record with a 4.19 ERA in 14 career appearances (nine starts).
