Game Preview
The Baltimore Orioles are looking to maintain their momentum against the Houston Astros as they wrap up a four-game series on Sunday night in Baltimore.
After a slow start, the Orioles have recently found success, winning the last two games following a 6-0 defeat in the series opener.
"We keep emphasizing that we’re never out of the game," said Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser. "Our pitching has kept us in it, and we’re making a concerted effort to attack their bullpen when it matters."
The Orioles managed to come back in their last two victories, with Anthony Santander hitting a grand slam in the eighth inning on Friday, and rookie Jackson Holliday delivering a three-run pinch-hit double in the sixth inning for a 3-2 win on Saturday.
This may signal a turning point for the team.
"We’ve been searching for that big hit," stated Orioles manager Brandon Hyde. "When we’re not getting it, questions arise about what’s going wrong."
Hyde noted that the team needs to slow down in high-pressure moments, which will help them perform better in clutch situations.
Holliday, who has faced challenges in his rookie season and is regarded as the top prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline, has had some experience pinch-hitting in the minors.
"I had a few chances in the minor leagues, and we practiced it, so it paid off," he said. While he aspires to be involved in more crucial moments, he understands the learning process.
Baltimore has gone 4-5 over its last nine games, with both comeback victories helping them secure half of those wins. The Orioles are aiming for their second series victory this month before embarking on a six-game road trip.
The Astros, on the other hand, have recently won 12 of their last 17 games but are struggling, having lost four of their last five.
They are also waiting for Yordan Alvarez to return; he has 25 home runs but has missed the last two games due to neck stiffness.
"He’s still experiencing some discomfort," said Astros manager Joe Espada.
Additionally, they are monitoring Alex Bregman’s elbow injury, as he has been performing below his usual standards in this series.
"He’s day-to-day, and we need him back in the lineup," Espada added.
On the mound for Baltimore will be right-hander Dean Kremer (6-9, 4.30 ERA), who has secured wins in his last two outings, allowing just one run over six innings against the Nationals and Mets.
Kremer holds a perfect 3-0 record with a remarkable 1.14 ERA in three career starts against the Astros, including a four-hit shutout last September.
For Houston, left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (6-9, 4.37 ERA) is set to start. He has gone 2-0 in four starts since joining the team from the Blue Jays, consistently going into the sixth inning in each outing.
Kikuchi has previously faced the Orioles twice this season while pitching for Toronto, boasting a 1-0 record with a 1.74 ERA against them in his career.
