If you’re the Philadelphia 76ers, the question about 2022-23 has to be, if not now, when? An argument can be made that no team did more in the offseason to improve their chances to win a title this season and that work was done to one of the best cores in the NBA.
James Harden took a pay cut, and GM Daryl Morey put it to great use to build tremendous depth on the roster. It also helps that from P.J. Tucker to Danuel House to Montrezl Harrell, many of them played with Harden in Houston, so the adjustment period for this roster to gel should be relatively quick and painless.
The biggest addition of all though was the draft night trade that brought De’Anthony Melton from Memphis. At just 24-years-old, Melton is a defensive beast whose offensive numbers have been getting better every year. Memphis didn’t want to pay him his next contract, so the Grizzlies loss is the 76ers gain. He’ll be there to help close out games and lead the second unit.
Add in a coach in Doc Rivers with a championship pedigree and one of the league’s best players in Joel Embiid and you find a team that’s as well constructed as any to win it all this season.
